For instance, your computer screen can show around 1,000 color dots from one end of the screen to the other. Your printer can pack 6,000 color dots onto the same length on the paper. When you draw a simple line on the screen, its edges appear jagged. The line would look harsh if you simply dump the screen image onto the printer (many other graphics software packages do exactly that).
